Explained. Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022. What is Click Chemistry and Bioorthogonal Chemistry?

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 was awarded to three scientists 🥇

  1. Barry Sharpless, Scripps Research, USA,
  2. Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Stanford University, USA and
  3. Morten Meldal, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Explained. Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022. What is Click Chemistry and Bioorthogonal Chemistry?

Barry Sharpless pioneered the concept of click chemistry, a form of simple and reliable chemistry, where reactions occur quickly, and unwanted by-products are avoided. He also presented the first click reaction copper catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition.

Carolyn Bertozzi developed click reactions that work inside living organisms. Her bioorthogonal reactions take place without disrupting the normal chemistry of the cell. She developed strain induced azide-alkyne cycloaddition; a biorthogonal reaction. It is now used globally to explore cells, biomolecules and track biological processes.

This video is a summary of Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022.

Morten Meldal independently presented the crown jewel of click chemistry: the copper catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. A chemical reaction utilised in development of pharmaceuticals, for mapping DNA.

Thank You So Much
