Similarities of Meiosis II and Mitosis

In the last post, we discussed the similarities between mitosis and meiosis. In this post we specifically pick out the similarities between mitosis and meiosis II. Both divisions are same except in the difference in chromosome number.
Similarities
  • Consists of prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase similar to mitosis
  • Sister chromatids are aligned at the metaphase plate during metaphase
  • Separation of sister chromatids occurs during anaphase II of meiosis II
  • Result in the production of two identical cells to that of the parent cell (in parent cell and daughter cell, the chromosome number is the same)
At the beginning of mitosis
  • Chromosome #: 46
  • Chromatid #: 92 (as DNA has duplicated)
mitosis
In both mitosis and meiosis the pattern of division is same as in the figure
After mitosis:
daughter cells has
  • Chromosome #: 46
  • Chromatid #: 46
Chromosome number is 46 at the beginning and the same in the daughter cell also.
Now let us look into the number of chromosomes and chromatids in Meiosis II.
At the beginning of meiosis, cell has
  • Chromosome #: 23
  • Chromatid #: 46
After meiosis:
daughter cells has
  • Chromosome #: 23
  • Chromatid #: 23
Chromosome number is 23 at the beginning and the same in the daughter cell.
Both divisions are same
For better understanding, have a look at the number of chromosome and chromatids in mitosis and meiosis II. Both divisions are same. The difference is only in the number of chromosomes.
Mitosis
Prophase
o Chromosome #: 46
o Chromatid #: 92

Metaphase
o Chromosome #: 46
o Chromatid #: 92

Anaphase (sister chromatids are separated)
o Chromosome #: 92
o Chromatid #: 92

Telophase/Cytokinesis
o Chromosome #: 46
o Chromatid #: 46

Chromosome number is 46 at the beginning and the same in the daughter cell

Meiosis II (2nd Cell Division]
Prophase II
o Chromosome #: 23
o Chromatid #: 46

Metaphase II
o Chromosome #: 23
o Chromatid #: 46

Anaphase II (sister chromatids are separated similar to mitosis)
o Chromosome #: 46
o Chromatid #: 46

Telophase/Cytokinesis II
o Chromosome #: 23
o Chromatid #: 23
Chromosome number is 23 at the beginning and the same in the daughter cell
